A Life in Scent
Born in rural California, Justine’s early years were shaped among Sierra Nevada forests—where she began blending pine resins and wild blossoms over a camp stove, creating her first personal “perfume” at age 13 using pine bark, elderberries, and thyme.
Self-taught in herbcraft, soap-making, and eventually natural perfumery, she built Sierra Soapourri (1997) and Delicia Skincare (2005), weaving her botanical craft into entrepreneurial practice.
Over the years, Justine has become known as a working perfumer’s perfumer—valued not for showmanship, but for a career shaped in the lab, stillroom, and studio—rooted in botanical patience, versatility, and deep olfactory intelligence.
Why Perfumers Come to Justine
-
- A medium expert: She knows the unpredictable heart of natural aromatics, not lab isolates—distilling techniques from home-grown raw materials to formulation strategy.
-
- Educator with substance: Her teaching isn’t superficial—it carries the depth of decades lived with raw botanical material, stillness in experimentation, and rigorous safety standards.
-
- Artist, not influencer: Justine doesn’t chase trends. She builds quiet, introspective fragrances—drawing parallels between her perfumery and the fluid, patent-driven art of Loïe Fuller.
Real Recognition
“I caught flak for my nontraditional business model… nearly everything is limited-edition… This gives me the opportunity to flex my creative muscle.” — About her practice & teaching approach.
“Working with nature… planting seeds, tending plants, harvesting blossoms… is the most creatively fulfilling work.” — Reflecting her artistic philosophy.
What She Teaches
Justine invites professional perfumers to learn a different medium—not to replace their existing skillset, but to expand it. With her mentorship, seasoned perfumers discover how to:
-
- Treat harvest, soil, seasonality like co-composers
-
- Build accords and fixatives from real plant resins, not chemicals
-
- Listen and adapt to botanical variability without sacrificing artistry
Her workshops move beyond formula—they’re a form of creative listening, open to anyone ready to let their materials speak back.
In Summary
