About the Natural Perfume Academy (NPA)
For People Who Know Scent Means More
Some people have always noticed scent more deeply than the people around them. They remember the exact smell of a childhood garden, a forest after rain, incense from a family ritual or a particular material carried on the wind years ago. They collect oils, plants, books and ideas. They may already work in aromatherapy, formulation, fragrance, science or the arts. Others arrive as complete beginners with little more than curiosity and a sense that smell has always meant something important to them.
The Natural Perfume Academy exists to help people turn that instinct into knowledge, method and creative practice.
Founded in Ireland in 2008, NPA teaches the art and science of natural perfumery to students around the world.
You bring the memories, curiosity and ideas. We teach you how to make the perfume.
Why Students Find Their Way to NPA
People begin studying natural perfumery for many different reasons. Some want to translate memory, place and emotion into scent. Some have spent years working with essential oils and are ready to move from functional blending into artistic composition. Some are returning to creativity after careers, parenthood, illness or years spent putting practical life first.
Others want to develop a perfume brand, improve an existing product range, teach more confidently or bring the plants and aromatic traditions of their own country into contemporary perfumery. Many have been circling the subject for years without knowing where to begin.
What brings them together is the feeling that scent carries memory, atmosphere, culture, identity and meaning.
NPA gives that sensitivity a structure.
From Instinct to Method
Natural perfumery is an art, but it is not guesswork.
Our courses teach students how to observe, evaluate and understand natural aromatic materials before asking them to create finished perfumes.
Students learn how to:
- train and develop the sense of smell
- evaluate essential oils, absolutes, resins, extracts and other natural materials
- dilute and handle materials accurately
- keep clear and useful formulation records
- understand perfume structure and material behaviour
- build accords and balanced compositions
- formulate with safety and responsible use in mind
- evaluate, adjust and refine a perfume over time
- develop an individual creative language
- move from an initial idea to a finished perfume
The aim is not to teach every student to make the same fragrance.
It is to provide enough knowledge, discipline and practical experience for each student to begin making informed creative decisions of their own.
Who Studies with Us?
NPA students come from a wide range of backgrounds.
They include complete beginners, aromatherapists, artists, herbalists, skincare formulators, chemists, designers, educators, distillers, fragrance professionals, gardeners and independent business owners. Some want to build a professional practice. Others want a serious creative discipline without immediately turning it into a business. Some arrive knowing exactly what they hope to create. Others allow the direction to emerge through study.
You do not need to arrive as a perfumer.
You need curiosity, patience and a willingness to smell carefully, record honestly and practise.
Learning That Fits Around Real Life
The Academy has taught online since its beginning in 2008.
Our courses are designed for students living in different countries, working across different time zones and studying alongside jobs, families, businesses and other commitments. The Natural Perfumery Diploma Course is self-paced and includes lifetime access. Students can return to lessons, repeat evaluations and allow their practical work the time it needs. Learning takes place through structured course material, practical exercises, assignments, discussion and tutor feedback.
Natural perfumery cannot be rushed. Materials change over time, compositions need rest and the nose develops through repeated use. Flexible study allows students to learn seriously without pretending that the rest of their lives has disappeared.
The CPD-Certified Natural Perfumery Diploma Course
The Academy is a member of The CPD Certification Service.
Our principal professional programme, the CPD-Certified Natural Perfumery Diploma Course, has been independently assessed and certified for Continuing Professional Development.
The Diploma provides a structured foundation in natural perfumery, including perfume history, safety, chemistry, material evaluation, formulation, studio practice, olfactory development, branding and the creation of a final perfume.
Alongside the Diploma, NPA offers focused workshops, mini-courses, business education and specialist learning opportunities for students at different stages of their development.
Natural Materials Deserve Knowledge and Respect
NPA specialises in natural perfumery because of the beauty, complexity, variation and creative possibilities of botanical and naturally derived aromatic materials.
We do not teach that natural automatically means harmless, sustainable or ethically produced.
Natural materials are powerful materials. Their safe and responsible use requires proper dilution, accurate documentation, awareness of restrictions and careful sourcing.
Students are encouraged to consider the full journey of a material: where it was grown, how it was harvested and extracted, who produced it and how it should be handled in a finished formulation.
Our approach combines appreciation with responsibility.
Certification & Quality Assurance:
In line with our commitment to authenticity and high standards, the Academy also has specific objectives around certification and quality control:
Supplier Verification: We assure natural perfumers that their raw material suppliers meet rigorous NPA certification standards, guaranteeing the authenticity, purity, and ethical sourcing of the essential oils, absolutes, and other materials they use. This creates a trusted supply chain for our community.
Product Authenticity: We ensure end users (the customers who buy natural perfumes) that any perfumer selling their creations under NPA certification is providing a truly natural product, free from synthetic additives or adulterants. This transparency builds consumer trust in NPA-certified brands.
Quality Assurance: We maintain high standards of quality and integrity in all certified products and processes. Through our certification programs, we continually monitor and uphold the quality of natural perfumes that carry the NPA seal, fostering credibility within the natural perfume community.
Ethical Practices: We promote environmentally sound and ethically responsible practices across the industry. This includes advocating for sustainability in ingredient sourcing, fair trade and labor practices, cruelty-free testing, and cultural respect when using traditional ingredients. By championing ethics, we contribute to the long-term sustainability of natural resources and the communities that depend on them.
Your Own Landscape Belongs in Your Perfumery
NPA is an international school, but we do not want every student to produce culturally anonymous work. Our students bring memories and materials from forests, farms, cities, islands, coastlines, deserts and gardens around the world. Some are inspired by ancient perfume traditions. Others want to work with locally grown plants, support small producers or preserve aromatic knowledge connected with their own land and culture.
The purpose of training is not to erase those differences. It is to give students the technical foundation needed to express them more successfully.
Our Story
The Natural Perfume Academy was co-founded in 2008 by Ruth Ruane and Justine Crane. It began as an early online course dedicated specifically to natural perfumery at a time when structured distance learning in the subject was difficult to find. Ruth has owned and operated the Academy throughout its history, developing its online platforms, business, course delivery and international reach. Ane Walsh, a student in NPA’s first class, went on to become an accomplished natural perfumer, author and educator. Today, she is NPA’s lead tutor and Ambassador in Brazil, supporting students and teaching across English- and Portuguese-language programmes.
The Academy has continued to develop through the contribution of students, graduates, tutors and specialist course creators from many countries.
What began as one online class has grown into an international learning community while remaining independently owned and closely connected to its students.
Current Leadership
Ruth Ruane
Founder, Owner and Academy Director
Ruth oversees the Natural Perfume Academy, its educational platforms, course development, student support, marketing and wider business operations.
Her background includes natural skincare, digital education, branding, ecommerce and more than eighteen years of building and managing online learning environments.
Ane Walsh
Lead Tutor, Master Natural Perfumer and NPA Ambassador in Brazil
Ane brings extensive experience in natural perfume formulation, teaching and aromatic materials.
As one of NPA’s earliest graduates, she also represents something central to the Academy: students developing their own knowledge, practice and professional voice, then helping others to do the same.
Specialist educators and course creators also contribute to particular programmes and areas of study.
More Than a Course Platform
The Academy continues to develop practical resources for the wider natural-perfumery community.
These include free tools for material pairing, dilution calculations, perfume formulation and safety information, together with articles, podcasts, workshops and specialist courses.
NPA also operates a separate Business Certification Programme for natural perfumers and related businesses that wish to communicate their working standards more clearly.
A Place to Begin, Develop and Keep Learning
Some students arrive with a business plan. Some arrive with a sensitive nose and no idea where it may lead. Some are returning to a creative part of themselves that has been waiting for years.
The Natural Perfume Academy provides a place to begin seriously, learn methodically and develop work that remains recognisably your own.
Natural perfumery asks for attention, patience, curiosity and practice.
It rewards them with an art form capable of carrying memory, place, emotion and identity in ways that words sometimes cannot.
